Baoren Qi (1905-1997)

Baoren Qi, the deputy director of the Steelmaking Workshop, the deputy director of the Steel Casting Workshop, the deputy section chief of the Forging and Metallurgy Department, the deputy director of the Forging and Metallurgy Division, and the deputy chief Forging and Metallurgy engineer of former Shenyang Heavy Machinery Factory.

In the early days of the factory's establishment after liberation, Baoren Qi served as the deputy director of the steelmaking workshop. He actively organized workers and engineering technicians to repair the open-hearth furnace and produced the first batch of molten steel on October 31 of the same year. In 1950, the Chinese People's Volunteers in the Korean War urgently needed military pickaxes. The higher authorities issued an urgent task to Shenyang Heavy Machinery Factory to complete 100,000 military pickaxes within 10 days. Under the circumstances of short time and heavy tasks, he proposed new processes such as "casting instead of forging and combining casting and forging" and "core stacking and string casting", which increased production efficiency several times and ensured the completion of the task of 100,000 military pickaxes one day ahead of schedule. In 1952, the country began to develop the power industry, and the factory undertook the task of manufacturing the runner for hydroelectric generators. He worked together with the workers of the large rotor team to conduct research and produced the first 800kW hydraulic generator rotor in China in July of that year. Since then, various specifications of hydraulic generator runners have been produced successively, meeting the needs of national hydropower station construction. In the early 1960s, the factory undertook the task of designing and manufacturing 125MN free forging hydraulic presses. He pooled the wisdom of many people and created new processes such as "simultaneous steel tapping from multiple furnaces", "simultaneous pouring from multiple ladles" and "on-site shakeout", which solved the difficulties of large tonnage of cast steel parts, small capacity of steelmaking furnaces and insufficient lifting capacity, and accumulated experience for the continued production of large cast steel parts. In addition, to address the harm of dust from the sand cleaning of cast steel parts to workers, after his research, he adopted new processes such as "low-temperature water spraying" and "water immersion sand cleaning", which later developed into the nationally renowned "six-five water blasting sand cleaning method". This significantly improved the working environment for sand cleaning of cast steel parts and increased production efficiency by 3 to 5 times. In addition, he is also dedicated to the research on the correction of large cast steel parts. By adopting the new process of "heating correction in the kiln", he has improved the quality of cast steel parts and reduced waste products. For over 30 years since he joined the factory, he has been diligent and dedicated in his work, constantly delving into research, and has made outstanding contributions to the development of the factory's casting production. He is deeply respected by all the employees of the factory.
