Fuwen Chen (1918-1998)
National Model Worker

Fuwen Chen, a member of the Communist Party of China, was formerly the production team leader, section chief, workshop director and deputy chief forging and metallurgical engineer of the Foundry Workshop of Shenyang Heavy Machinery Factory. In 1979, he was awarded the title of National Model Worker and the leader of the Advanced collective in national socialist construction.

In 1953, the large rotor team led by him produced China's first 10,000-kilowatt large rotor, ending the history of relying on imports for large rotors. Since then, the large rotor group has successively broken through 72,500 kilowatts, 100,000 kilowatts, 225,000 kilowatts and 300,000 kilowatts of rotors, with quality reaching the world's advanced level. From 1953 to 1978, the total installed capacity of rotors produced by the Large Rotor Group reached 6.23 million kilowatts, accounting for 90% of the national Francis turbine capacity at that time. In 1964, the Large rotor group, along with the Hengchang Ma group, was named the two red flags of the national industrial machinery front by the First Ministry of Machinery Industry.

Shenyang Heavy Machinery Factory is known as the "cradle of China's heavy machinery industry". Here, the old generation of workers, despite the harsh environment, poor equipment conditions and very low technical proficiency, with the spirit of striving for national glory, diligent research and daring to practice, turned many impossibilities into vivid realities! It was precisely here that, under the leadership of Fuwen Chen, the older generation of workers established the large rotor casting team that later gained nationwide recognition in the mechanical industry, making tremendous contributions to the development of China's water conservancy and power industry.

In the 1950s, China hydropower industry was in a period of development. The "large rotor" of the water turbine required for hydropower generation equipment, as the "heart" of the entire unit, became a key product. However, the country was just getting started and everything was in need of reconstruction. The workers were enthusiastic but had no experience at all. Production needed to be scaled up, but the equipment capacity was insufficient... What should do? The factory leaders cast trusting glances at Fuwen Chen, a section chief with rich casting experience and reliable composure.

When the large rotor casting team was first established, the team leader Fuwen Chen and his fellow workers were all very troubled by the upcoming work. After all, they had never even seen the appearance of a rotor before, but now they had to figure out the rotor with complex profiles, high quality requirements and great production difficulty all at once, which was truly very difficult. What sounded like a wild fantasy couldn't stop the group members, who were brimming with patriotic enthusiasm, at all. With an indomitable spirit, Fuwen Chen led everyone to familiarize themselves with the drawings and conduct research together with the technicians during the day. When I got home in the evening, my mind was still full of blueprints, constantly pondering and exploring. If one point is not clear, discuss and study it repeatedly. If one experiment is unsuccessful or unsatisfactory, make two or three improvements and redo it. After more than four months of hard work, the large rotor casting team created a "miracle" in the same year: the 10,000-kilowatt large rotor was successfully trial-produced, contributing its own domestically produced water turbine runner to the mother country.

From Tai pingshao by the river to Wu labai on the Tarim River, "ShenZhong" brand turbine rotors are all used. Before the country vigorously promoted thermal power generation, ShenZhong large rotors were renowned all over the world. From the successful trial production of 10,000-kilowatt rotors to the successful manufacturing of 300,000-kilowatt rotors, from being able to produce only mediocre performance rotors to manufacturing rotors that meet international advanced quality standards, and with an outstanding record of producing 173 rotors without any defective products over 30 years, the large rotor casting team has created a miracle in the history of turbine rotor production. In 1959, the Great Rotor Group was awarded the title of Advanced Collective of National Socialist Construction.

Fuwen Chen and his large rotor casting team became famous, but when he encountered difficulties, he never reached out to the organization for help once more. Fuwen Chen is the only labor in his family. Although he started working at the factory with a salary of 128 yuan as an eighth-level worker, it was clearly not enough to cover the living expenses of more than ten people in his family. The child eats a lot but doesn't have enough food, so he and his wife go hungry for a meal. He lived in a bungalow. At night, while the children crowded on the heated brick beds, he often stood on the ground working overtime to study the drawings. During the three-year period of hardship, Fuwen Chen once invited the families of the workers in his group who had no food to live and eat at his home. There wasn't enough food, so the whole family ate dumplings made of elm seeds and wild vegetables. His third daughter suffered from intestinal perforation due to long-term hunger and lack of nutrition. She had to undergo major surgery to survive. Even so, he still often tells his daughter, "We should be kind-hearted and help those in need." Fuwen Chen, who became the deputy chief forging engineer of the factory, worked at ShenZhong until he was 76 years old. In the 1990s, during the period when the factory's performance was not good, only half of the salary was paid. It just so happened that he got a cerebral thrombosis. The salary he received was not even enough to buy medicine for treatment, let alone make ends meet. But he would rather live frugally and shed silent tears than talk to his workplace. Until his death at the age of 80, Fuwen Chen still lived in two old-fashioned single-room buildings without a living room. A large lying box brought from his hometown was the only piece of furniture in his home before his youngest daughter, Wei Chen, got married.

Dad always says that one should never cause trouble for others or the organization. Wei Chen, with red eyes, said, "Before his death, he always hung the group photos he took at the National Heroes' Conference and the National Model Workers' Conference in the most prominent position at home. He was most willing to often talk to his children and grandchildren about his' past glory '- leading the large rotor team to successfully trially-produce the first 72,500-kilowatt water turbine runner in China." The heroic collective, the Large Rotor Group, was named the "National Mechanical Industry University Red Flag Collective". In 1979, he was awarded the title of National Model Worker. Every time he talked about these, he would beam with joy and talk non-stop. Dad regarded these as the greatest wealth of his life. He has also been influencing his children and grandchildren with the spirit of a model worker through his own actions, educating them to study more, make a living by their own abilities, and become responsible for their families and beneficial to the country and society. These words still often echo in our ears to this day."
