Zheng’an Wang (1925-1964)
Model Worker of Liaoning Province

Zheng’an Wang, the chief designer, director of the Design Department and general designer of former Shenyang Heavy Machinery Factory. He was awarded the title of Model Worker of Shenyang in 1951 and 1952, He was the Model Worker of Liaoning Province in 1954.

In 1952, Zheng'an Wang took charge of designing the five-ton steam hammer. It is the first heavy-duty machine independently designed and manufactured in New China, which pioneered Chinese history of heavy-duty machine production. In the early 1960s, he served as chief designer of 12,500 ton horizontal extruder and led to complete the design task of the important equipment. From then , China has become the third country possess a ten-thousand-ton hydraulic press in the world.

In 1950, Zheng'an Wang graduated from Mechanical Engineering Department, Institute of Technology, Nanjing University. As a trainee technician, he was assigned to Design Department of the Second Northeast Machinery (former Shenyang Heavy Machinery Factory). At the factory, Baoren Qi, a foundry worker, who invented the new process of "stackedcore serial casting". Under his lead, workers produced 100,000 military pickaxes in merely 19 days to support the frontline troops in Korea. It was widely praised. Zheng'an Wang thought as one part of the factory, he should do his utmost to perform his duties well.

Zheng'an Wang buried himself in measuring the dimensions, converting drawings, and carrying out various technical preparations for production every day. Soon his professional competence stood out among the numerous workers in the factory. In the same year, upon instructions from the competent authority, the factory was required to manufacture eighteen sets 14-foot gantry planers to support partner factories. During the fabrication of the planers, the bed surfaces kept deforming and failed to meet precision requirements. Zheng'an Wang adopted a series of measures to resolve the problem. Thanks to this outstanding performance, his talent gained recognition in the entire factory, and he was appointed chief of the Design Department.

In 1952, the factory decided to independently manufacture domestic heavy machinery. At the request of top management, Zheng'an Wang proposed the idea of trial-producing a five-ton steam hammer based on the blueprints and materials left behind by the Japanese factory, and he was in charge of the product design. On 16th December, a steam hammer of 9.5 meters high, weight 150 tons, with a nominal pressure of five tons was successfully trial-produced, restoring the production capacity of the factory's forging and pressing workshop. For all the workers in the factory, the successful trial production of the five-ton steam hammer like celebration of joyous festival. It should be noted that this five-ton steam hammer was the first heavy machine independently manufactured by New China, marking the beginning of the national history of producing heavy machinery and becoming a milestone of epoch-making significance. As for Zheng'an Wang, due to his outstanding contributions during this period, he was consecutively elected as a Model Worker of Shenyang City for four years from 1951 to 1954, and in 1954 he was also elected as Model Worker of Liaoning Province.

In the early 1960s, the CPC Central Committee decided to develop the national defense industry through self-reliance, resolving to independently research and manufacture nine sets of large-scale complete equipment. One of nine sets is 12,500-ton non-ferrous metal extrusion press which was a large extrusion and die-forging apply for the development of the aviation industry, used for forging and extruding wing spars, wall panels, profiles, and nose cones for aircraft and missiles. At that time, this task was assigned to the Shenyang Heavy Machinery Factory.

At that time, only the United States and the Soviet Union possessed 12,500-ton horizontal extrusion presses. In China, we had neither any design experience in this field nor any materials to take reference. How difficult of the development task could be imagined. To fulfill this arduous and glorious political mission, leaders at all levels searching for lots of solutions. After extensive discussions, it was finally decided that Zheng'an Wang would serve as Chief Designer, presiding over the engineering design of the project.

On hearing of the news, Zheng'an Wang, at thirty-six years old, was so moved that tears streamed down his face. With an absolute conviction, he declared that Please don’t worry. I will definitely make China fly. It is too excited to omit the word "airplane". Shouldering the heavy responsibility and pouring whole heart into his promise, Zheng'an Wang produced a complete design proposal in only ten days. The more remarkable was that the design proposal passed on its very first review.

In 1962, at a meeting held in Harbin, participants pointed out the shortcomings of the same type presses of Soviet extrusion that the core issue is the piercing problem. After one year intense debate, more than a dozen proposals were put forward by various parties, but none were approved. During the controversy, Zheng'an Wang carefully considered the characteristics of existing proposals and building upon an entirely new piercing solution that could meet the process requirements in production. After the proposal approved, Shenyang Heavy Machinery Factory built 3,500 ton prototype, and the results verified the reliability of Zheng'an Wang solution, which achieve a major breakthrough in the development of heavy machinery industry in China.

To fulfill the promise of letting China fly, Zheng'an Wang worked almost forgot food and drink. In the second half of 1962, he began to feel a dull pain in his right chest and abdomen, which eventually worsened to have to take large doses of painkillers. But he still stick to his position, refusing to see the doctor. Sometimes, he presses the pains with hands and sometimes pushes against with his knee, all driving himself is work intensely. Zheng'an Wang said, "It is not because I do not want to go to the hospital, but I am afraid to face the cruel reality and crush my will. It is better for me to finish the 12,500 ton extrusion press."

Throughout the entire design and manufacturing process, it was not only the workers' hard labor and sweat moved everyone, but also Zheng'an Wang unwavering dedication to the project. Anticipating the harsh realities ahead, he endured constant pain and suffering, persisting until he received confirmation from the Southwest Aluminum Plant that the production test machine had fully met expectation. He went to the hospital with his wife, was diagnosed with late liver cancer. Even at the end of his life, Zheng'an Wang remained deeply concerned about the progress of the 12,500 ton extruder construction. But the cancer had spread merciless beyond control, and doctors could not do anything to save him. In his final struggle against the disease, in 39 years old, Zheng'an Wang carved into the wall with his fingernail a painful cry "I was born with talent destined for use, yet god refuses my will." On February 26, 1964, Zheng'an Wang passed away, left behind his blessings for his mother country.

In 1966, a 12,500-ton horizontal extrusion hydraulic press was successfully manufactured, making China the third country in the world to possess a ten-thousand-ton hydraulic press. The Shenyang Heavy Machinery Factory made significant contributions to the development of the aviation industry and was awarded a silver medal by the state.
